Towel Washing 101
The best thing about new towels is how soft and fluffy they are when you first buy them. Unfortunately, after several washes they don’t feel as soft and don’t look as fluffy. The way you wash your towels may let you hold onto that initial softness.
- Separate your light and dark towels. If you wash your white towels with your colored ones, the white towels might pick up some of the color and look dingy.
- Don’t overload your machine. It’s easy to do with a large load of towels but if your machine is overstuffed then it spins less and your towels don’t get as clean as they should.
- Use less detergent. Using too much detergent is what causes your towels to get stiff. Layer after layer of detergent after several washes is what makes your towels less soft. When it comes to towels, less is more.
- Don’t use fabric softener every time you wash your towels. This way you will avoid any waxy buildup on your towels.
- Machine cycle. Wash in a regular or normal machine cycle. This is a better way to get any bacteria from the fabric fibers that a gentle cycle might not get to.
- Water temperature. White and lighter colored towels can be washed in hot water. Dark colored towels shouldn’t be washed in anything hotter than warm.
- Excess water. Ring out those towels as you throw them in the dryer. Removing the excess water will help the towels dry faster.
- The best option is to air dry your towels but that is not always possible. Make sure that you don’t over dry them in the dryer. Over drying can damage the fibers so use the regular or automatic cycle.
- Don’t ever iron towels – this will damage the fibers.
- Clean towels are fluffy towels so wash them twice a week.
